Volunteer Opportunities
The Bellarmine community extends far beyond the walls of the Chapel itself. In a 2015 inventory of parishioner time and talent, we found that the majority of our parishioners are involved in some form of either direct service, education or advocacy across the city and even globally. Over 300 organizations were listed. While some of these commitments are unique to individual parishioners, many are shared by multiple parishioners who have had long-term bonds with specific organizations. Several of these shared opportunities are highlighted below.
Each of these organizations is always interested in recruiting more volunteers - so please consider the possibility that this might be what you have been looking for! If you would like to be connected to any of these organizations, or to explore the broader inventory of community connections, please contact our Director of Social Mission, Tim Severyn, at severynte@xavier.edu
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Bellarmine serves as a support congregation with Church of the Advent in Walnut Hills to offer housing and meals to homeless families. Volunteers are needed for four weeks each year to spend time with families, play games, prepare food, and more.
Habitat for Humanity: Each year, a team of parishioners joins with our local Shalom Coalition in the construction of a home for a low-income, first-time homeowner. Volunteers can choose between two or more days each week between early spring and late summer to help out. No building experience is required.
Tender Mercies: Each month, on the second Saturday of the month, a group of parishioners cooks and serves a meal to residents who are challenged by homelessness and mental illness.
Kairos Prison Ministry: A team of male parishioners offer semi-annual 4-day Kairos retreats to prisoners at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville and Lebanon Correction Institution. Cookies are always collected before retreats.
Lydia’s House: Parishioners offer a variety of support to this local Catholic Worker House which serves formerly homeless women and their children, as they reach self-sufficiency.
Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center: In 2016, Bellarmine entered into covenantal relationship with IJPC, and remains a strong supporter of the important work this organization does to educate and advocate on issues such as the death penalty, immigration, human trafficking and nonviolence/peace.
Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition: On the final Sunday of every month, we are visited by our friendly StreetVibes vendor, Grady Cook, who helps raise money to support the important assistance and advocacy work of the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition.
Equal Exchange Fair Trade Sales: Bellarmine believes in the importance of fair trade; parishioners supports this concept by purchasing in the narthex of our chapel fair-trade products (coffee, tea, chocolate, oil, and more) on the fourth Sunday of every month.
On the global level, the parish continues to support the missionary activities of Fr. Terry Charlton through the St. Aloysius School for HIV/AIDS orphans in Nairobi, Kenya and the work of Fr. Joe Mulligan in Nicaragua. The parish also maintains an active www.kiva.org account, for giving microloans to individuals across the developing world.
These are just a sample of the many efforts that are undertaken by our parishioners. For more information, please contact our Director of Social Mission, Tim Severyn, at severynte@xavier@edu
