Fresh is Better: Evanston Community Gardens
Fresh is Better: Evanston Community Gardens is a collaborative effort of Bellarmine parishioners and our Evanston neighbors through the Evanston Community Council and the Evanston Recreation Center. In the last two years, the project has included five major initiatives:
1) The installation of 41 residential garden beds for Evanston homeowners and renters, with mentoring support from Bellarmine parishioners throughout the growing season.
2) The installation of 6 educational garden beds, including both vegetables/herbs and a butterfly habitat, at the Evanston Recreation Center, used for programming with youth in the summer, and serving as a source of free produce to community members.
3) The sponsoring of an annual Plant Sale near Earth Day to bring a variety of outdoor and indoor, perennial and annual, plants into the Evanston community at low cost.
4) The restoration of the Holloway Hope Community Gardens in Evanston, which had been fallow for several years, and is being revived as a hub for community building within the community.
5) The growing of food for donation to St. Andrew’s food pantry through the Nexus Community Gardens on Xavier’s campus, in collaboration with Xavier students.
