Death Penalty Abolition
“Today we state clearly that “the death penalty is inadmissible” [247] and the Church is firmly committed to calling for its abolition worldwide. [248]” - Pope Francis in Fratelli Tutti, October 3, 2020
A hallmark of Catholic Social Teaching has always been respect for the dignity and worth of each person as they are made in the image and likeness of God. In accordance with this idea, the death penalty can be viewed as a dangerous injustice in American society and the state of Ohio due to both its direct threat on human life as well as its racist application that contributes to white supremacy and the devaluing of the lives of People of Color. As a result, the death penalty can be seen as a threat to the beloved community we are called to build and maintain as well as a threat to the Gospel itself.
Bellarmine Chapel has been invited to join a statewide push to abolish the death penalty in Ohio by the end of Governor Mike DeWine’s term in 2022. This webpage will serve as a clearinghouse of educational materials, action alerts, and Catholic resources on the death penalty in the United States. |
