Once again a group of Bellarmine parishioners are on the team to present a Kairos retreat for prisoners. This year they will be at Lucasville Maximum Security Prison, April 15 - 18, and for the first time are offering the retreat for prisoners in protective custody. Because of restrictions at Lucasville and the timing with Easter, cookies are due at the chapel by noon on March 31. Boxes are in the vestibule to collect your donations. The cookies must be home baked, 2 dozen per gallon bag, nothing else in the bags (plates, foil, notes, etc.), and no restrictions on the cookie content. They can be bars or brownies, too. Please keep the members of the team, as well as the prisoners who will be enjoying your cookies, in your prayers as you bake and on the weekend of the retreat. The March winds are the morning yawn. ~ Lewis Grizzard BELLARMINE COMMUNITY CARE NETWORK As many of us experience, parishioners sometimes find themselves overwhelmed by issues such as illness, injury, surgery, recovery, a death of a family member, or during demanding caregiving times, among others. Often new parents could use an extra hand during pregnancy or after the birth. The Community Care Network is available to help by providing meals, transportation, errands, health visit accompaniment, communion and/or hospital visits, and even housework, emergency home repairs or yard work when needed. If you or someone you know in the parish could use an extra hand and the support of fellow parishioners, please contact Jeff Campbell, Parish Social Mission, at 745-1908 or campbellj5@xavier.edu to help with arrangements IT’S ALMOST TIME TO PARTY —EASTER STYLE! In the Christian tradition, Easter Vigil is the biggest party of the year as we recall our common story, celebrate the resurrection in our midst, and invite our elect to join us more intimately around the table at the feast of the Lord. In our Bellarmine community, we continue the party after the Vigil in the Nieporté Lounge, located behind the chapel. Please bring cookies, cake, candy, nuts, veggies and dip, bread, wine, beer–anything to share. Soft drinks and utensils will be provided. The lounge will be open about an hour before the Vigil begins to drop food off. We have a limited amount of space to refrigerate things, as needed, in the chapel’s sacristy and activity room. It’s always a great party—and this year’s promises to be a special one indeed. Please call Karen Brandstetter at 745-3349 with any questions. AN EASTER RETREAT: FACING LOSS, FINDING JOY Here's a chance to enter together more deeply into the Easter journey as it is unfolding in our lives. Registration is now open for the parish annual winter/spring retreat, April 16 and 17. Using Gospel stories and figures, we will explore together the path through loss into joy, considering the possibility of gifts in the ashes of our lives. The retreat will offer presentations, prayer services, song, story and time for private reflection and sharing. Retreat begins Friday night at 7 PM at Bellarmine Chapel and continues Saturday from 9:30 to 4:00 at the Pavilion at Milford Jesuit Spiritual Center. Leaders are: Bob Dufford, S.J., a retreat director, liturgical composer and musician with the St. Louis Jesuits; and Maureen Martin, MDiv, MPAC, a former pediatrician who now serves as a hospice chaplain, writer and spiritual director. Come to both sessions if you can, but come to either if your schedule only allows for one. No charge for Friday evening alone; Saturday session is $30 including lunch. Checks payable to Bellarmine Chapel can be sent to the office until April 13. Questions? Contact Liz Keuffer at 745-3398 or keuffer@xavier.edu. SAVE THE DATES! RANDOM QUOTE When Christ entered into Jerusalem the people spread garments in the way: when He enters into our hearts, we pull off our own righteousness, and not only lay it under Christ's feet but even trample upon it ourselves. ~ Augustus Toplady SVDP ASSISTS A STRUGGLING FAMILY Recently, SVDP visited a young single mother with 6 small children, working hard to raise her family and make ends meet. "Michelle" receives no child support and relies on family and friends to help pay her rent. She had fallen behind in her rent and was possibly going to be evicted. Her apartment was barren of much furniture or toys for the children to play with. SVDP was able to help her with her rent, and provided vouchers for some furniture and clothes for her children. They were also able to provide vouchers for 2 beds so that two of her children do not have to share a broken and worn out bed. Each week we make it a priority to provide the neighbors we serve with a good night of sleep, yet we are regularly surprised how many children don’t have a bed to call their own. Before leaving, SVDP gave the family a children’s Bible and all joined together in a prayer for the family. YOUNG ADULT GROUP AfterMass, St. Peter in Chains Cathedral's young adult ministry, will gather on Sunday, April 11. The guest speaker will be Mike Trimpe. He recently graduated from the Athenaeum of Ohio with his Masters in Pastoral Ministry and will speak on The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Washington Platform Restaurant & Saloon has agreed to sponsor this event and they are graciously providing the meal. If you are a young adult, single or married, please join them in the Undercroft South immediately following the 6:00 pm Mass. For more info contact 421-5354. DISCUSSION ON LEADERSHIP Parishioner Dan Hurley will moderate a lecture and discussion on Purpose, Freedom and Courage: Qualities of 21st Century Leaders on Tuesday, March 30 at 7 PM in the College Theatre at the College of Mt. St. Joseph. Keynote speaker is author Chris Lowney, whose talk will address attributes common to great leaders, such as the willingness to work for a purpose greater than oneself, the freedom to make sound choices, and habits of living that lead to results. Panelists include Rep. Steve Driehaus, Kathryn E. Merchant, James E. Schwab and Sr. Caroljean Willie. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.
