Dismantling Racism

The Bellarmine Dismantling Racism Team (BDRT) formed after a number of parishioners attended a
2007 conference focusing on faith, justice and overcoming racism. The theme of
that conference was “From Racism to Reconciliation”.

Inspired by that conference to do something locally, BDRT members have met regularly to study,
discuss and discern ways to overcome racism (interpersonal and institutional),
while helping Bellarmine Chapel become an even more welcoming, inclusive and
multicultural community of faith.

BDRT team plans have included:

 -       a parish anti-racism and cultural competency training for up to 40
parishioners

-       the 2010 Lenten Series, entitled “Who Is My Neighbor?”

-       scheduling occasional guest speakers/homilists, such as for the
Masses on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend

-       parish group visits to local museums for special exhibits, such as
“Race: Are We So Different?”, “Without Sanctuary” and “America I Am”

-       encouraging parish partnerships in nearby lower income neighborhoods
and congregations
