CIWC was established in March 2005 in partnership with faith communities to help provide dignity and nonprofit legal representation to low-wage day laborers and immigrant workers, who are among the lowest paid and least represented workers in our region. Their education and organizing efforts are designed to give low-income workers from all walks of life the opportunity to pursue workplace dignity with their employers and improve their working terms and conditions. CIWC seeks to provide community members the tools and support they need to transform bad jobs into good jobs, followers into leaders, and impoverished men and women into people who shape their own destiny. For more information about the Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center, visit their website at: www.cworkers.org. Please make checks out to Bellarmine Chapel. Believing that our gospel values call us to service and to working toward a more just society, members promote social mission efforts in the parish and community, identifying and facilitating engaging new opportunities for justice work on local, national and global issues of interest. Projects and issues in which we have been involved include the Alternative Gift Fair, Interfaith Hospitality Network, the monthly outreach collections, legislative advocacy through letter writing, and participation in the Diocesan Social Justice Collaborative. Monthly meetings are the last Wednesday of each month, from 7:00-8:30 PM. We are seeking 2-3 new members for the Core Team. NATIONAL SOLIDARITY VIGIL AND FAST Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds on injustice, to undo the things of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? ~Isaiah 58:6 July 18 - 24 – In the wake of the passage of Arizona’s SB 1070, a law that denies due process for immigrants, increases the likelihood of racial profiling and criminalizes those who offer direct aid for immigrants, the Interfaith Coalition and others are sponsoring an 8-week effort consisting of a "rolling" prayer vigil and fast as it moves from region to region from June 26 to July 28 culminating with a three day fast July 30-August 1, in Arizona and across the country. Publicly people of faith in Ohio will join their voices in the Isaiah 58 Rally at the Ohio Statehouse on July 21 to show support for the people of Arizona as they prepare for the extreme anti-immigrant legislation of Arizona’s SB1070. Privately, people of faith in Ohio will sign petitions "Not in our State" calling on Gov. Strickland to oppose legislation like AZ’s and pray for courageous leadership in Washington DC to act now on immigration reform. Sign up for a prayer time on July 18 in the narthex after each Mass. He urges, "Let us love God, but let it be with the strength of our arms and the sweat of our brows." As SVDP members we wrestle with many problems on behalf of our impoverished neighbors including baby beds. A recent visit brought us to "Michelle’s" home, where we learned of her need, two full beds so that she and the children wouldn’t have to sleep on the floor, which we were able to meet. In addition, she was in need of a crib for her baby, which is harder for us to come by. A few weeks later it was discovered that a Vincentian had a baby bed to donate. That week we delivered and struggled to set up the baby bed. It was a rewarding experience for us because we were also able to see the other new beds the family received and hear how appreciative they were for such wonderful gifts. As we were talking about Bellarmine’s SVDP Society, Michelle asked about getting her children baptized and wanted to contact Bellarmine about it because she was so thankful for the assistance she had received from our SVDP conference. In this situation, because of the follow up visit, we were able to see our work in action. Typically, due to the volume of requests each week as well as the fact that we are volunteers and not professionally trained social workers, we do not get the opportunity to see the extent to which our visits have impacted those we have assisted. We pray for those we visit and have faith that the fruits of our efforts will help them lessen their burdens as we respond to their request with a sympathetic ear and some material assistance.
