RANDOM QUOTE I do not at all understand the mystery of grace -- only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us. ~Anne Lamott, Traveling Mercies PARISH RETREAT An Easter Retreat: Facing Loss, Finding Joy Registration is now open for Bellarmine's annual retreat. Here's a chance to enter together more deeply into the Easter journey as it is unfolding in our lives. Using Gospel stories and figures, we will explore together the path through loss into joy, considering the possibility of gifts in the ashes of our lives. The dates are April 16-17, 2010. The retreat will feature times for quiet prayer, songs and stories. Our presenters will be Fr. Bob Dufford, S.J., and Maureen Martin, M.Div., MAPC. Bob is a composer of liturgical music whose work is known to us through the musical group, the St. Louis Jesuits, and a spiritual director at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh, WI. Maureen is a hospice chaplain in the Chicago area who previously worked as a pediatrician and pediatric nurse. The retreat will begin Friday evening in the Chapel. This session is free, no registration required. Then on Saturday, we'll spend the day at the pavilion of the Milford Jesuit Spiritual Center. Come either or both days. To register for Saturday, please send a check for $30 (lunch is included) made out to Bellarmine Chapel and include the names of those you are registering for. Mark your envelope Attention: Liz. A flyer with more details will be coming soon. ENDING CHILDHOOD HUNGER AND POVERTY Never known for avoiding big challenges, Bread for the World is currently urging Congress to take bold steps to end childhood hunger by making tax credits more available to low-income workers. The Earned Income Tax Credit, a refundable tax credit geared primarily toward families with children, has been a proven means for ending poverty. According to a 2006 Brookings Institution study, the EITC lifts more children above the poverty line than any other government program. In 2005, an average Earned Income Tas Credit of approximately $1800 lifted an estimated 5 million people, including about 2 ½ million children, above the poverty line. On Sunday, March 21, by participating in Bread for the World’s annual Offering of Letters, we’ll have the chance to help more families and children leave poverty. We’ll be asking Congress to protect and strengthen the Earned Income Tax Credit. Look for more details next week. SCRUTINY SUNDAYS The ceramic pot in the middle aisle is a way for you to unload some of the baggage you want to get rid of during this Lent: resentments, addictions, regrets, anxieties, discouragements. Or you could call it a chance to give over to God, or to our Higher Power, the things you can’t manage alone, where you are ready to surrender to the grace of God’s help. Why not? We pay a lot of attention in Lent to our practice of fasting or prayer or service; in some ways, we desire to make a difference happen for ourselves. We offer these good things: and all along God asks for you to offer only your burdens, your sins, where God will walk with you and heal, and lift the weight from your back. So the pot is there for you, for all of us. Make the simple gesture of writing down what you want to hand over, and drop it in the pot with the common stuff of our community’s life now. It’s a way of giving it to God. And then on the next couple of Sundays, we’ll pray at the liturgy to be delivered from the fears and hindrances. For the sake of our souls, our inner peace, and for the world’s peace and healing. YOUTH MINISTRY Friends are always welcome at Youth Ministry gatherings. SVDP CONNECTS WITH AN OLD FRIEND Recently our SVDP volunteers visited "Reggie", a neighbor who our team visited in the past. Reggie has been disabled and in a wheelchair for many years as a result of a gunshot wound. Reggie works for a local nonprofit and is generally able to provide for his needs on his salary and SSI. However, he occasionally needs assistance beyond his normal means of support. The Bellarmine SVdP conference was able to assist Reggie with his Duke Energy bill, which helped him avoid a disconnect notice. It was heartwarming for our team to re-establish contact with Reggie and to hear how he has been doing since our earlier visit. Our volunteers reported that it felt as though it they had just spent time catching up with an old friend. So many of our neighbors have serious and crushing physical circumstances, we’re fortunate to be able to pray with them and provide financial assistance.
