Here's a chance to enter together more deeply into the Easter journey as it is unfolding in our lives. Using Gospel stories and figures, we will explore together the path through loss into joy, considering the possibility of gifts in the ashes of our lives. The retreat will offer presentations, prayer services, song, story and time for private reflection and sharing. Retreat begins Friday night at 7 PM at Bellarmine Chapel and continues Saturday from 9:30 to 4:00 at the Pavilion at Milford Jesuit Spiritual Center. Leaders are: Bob Dufford, S.J., a retreat director, liturgical composer and musician with the St. Louis Jesuits; and Maureen Martin, MDiv, MPAC, a former pediatrician who now serves as a hospice chaplain, writer and spiritual director. Come to both sessions if you can, but come to either if your schedule only allows for one. No charge for Friday evening alone; Saturday session is $30 including lunch. Questions? Call Liz Keuffer at 745-3398. SAVE THE DATES! June 21-25, 2010 Vacation Bible School: This is an opportunity for children from preschool age through grade 6. Our theme this year is "God’s Big Backyard" and we will learn about service to others through classroom time, music, craft activities and drama. The times are 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM. We also need many parents to help make this program work. Please consider volunteering your time and talent this summer! CRS COLLECTION Next week, our regular Sunday basket collection will benefit The Catholic Relief Services Collection. The CRS Collection helps to fund six national Catholic organizations that improve quality of life and promote human dignity through global solidarity. Your gift will support agricultural development to strengthen economies and create food sustainability, provide outreach services to survivors of human trafficking, and supply pastoral care and advocacy for immigrants and refugees. By helping the marginalized, you give hope to Jesus in disguise. Please be generous in next week’s Catholic Relief Services Collection. Please remember to make checks out to Bellarmine Chapel with CRS in the memo line. (Note: A small portion of the Archdiocesan CRS collection supports archdiocesan initiatives not directly related to Catholic Relief Services, such as the Catholic Inner-city Schools Education Fund.) RANDOM QUOTE The books from which [children] learn must reflect movement and change and all of the infinite possibilities of minds at liberty. ~Virginia Hamilton HABITAT FOR HUMANITY COLLECTION Shalom Coalition of Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity is building its 14th house this year!! Bellarmine has been a member of this coalition since house number five. With seven other churches we build one home a year. That means this will be our ninth family to assist into independent decent housing. Thank you for all you have done in the past. We ask you to continue your generosity with a contribution during the collection on Sunday, April 18. Remember, this is not a handout, but a hand up. THANK YOU THANKS TO ALL OF YOU who took part in the Holy Week Triduum, never more moving and gracious, start to finish. I found myself caught up in the meaning of our deep tradition, the struggles and faith in our story, which takes place among us as a Sacrament of Christ Present again: transforming us again, as if for the first time. And in the midst of that truth, there was the constant presence of all of you who had the time to come, to practice for the ceremonies, readings, music, to do the heavy lifting of our environment and celebration day by day. With special thanks to our seasoned party-givers for the Vigil reception! Easter morning itself seemed all the more hope-filled for the big crowd that came, and they certainly were lifted by the music and ritual. These are grounding days for who we are! Thank you all. ~Richard Bollman, S.J.

SVDP GIVES COMFORT This winter, SVDP visited a young woman who had reached out with a request for assistance. "Carol" lived in a basement apartment with concrete floors. Upon entering, the volunteers noticed that the oven door was open. She said that was how she heated her two-room apartment. There was no furniture except a very worn table and two chairs, one of which was broken. While scheduling the visit, she also requested a bed because she was sleeping on the floor, using a sheet for her "mattress" and her coat as a blanket. Despite these stark circumstances, Carol was a very motivated and positive woman. She mentioned that she had found a job at a fast food restaurant, with limited hours, but was hoping to get more. She walks 45 minutes to work in the morning and back each night. SVDP was able to provide her with a voucher for a bed and bedding, some tokens so she could ride the bus to work, and some vouchers for furniture and household items. Basic necessities can make a big difference. Carol was also very excited to receive a Bible and was happy to join us in the closing prayer. MEDICAL MISSION TRIP TO UGANDA Parishioner Pat Berning will join a summer medical mission trip to the village of Kabingo, Uganda to work in a Comboni heath clinic with 24 other health care professionals from July 8-24. The delegation will see several hundred patients, while also seeking to improve village health through preventive long-term measures such as connecting with P&G's PUR clean water program. Consisting of four little villages (the largest of which is Kabingo), the Comboni-served sub-parish has a total population of 450 families (est. 2,250 people), all of whom face ongoing problems from a lack of clean water and from risk of malaria. P&G's PUR program offers the PUR sachets for just under 10 cents each at an estimated two sachets per day per household to treat 20 liters of clean water – totaling $80 per household per year. Treated mosquito nets cost $7 each, with a goal of a treated net in each house. Checks in support of Pat's medical mission trip can be submitted to the parish office, made payable to Bellarmine Chapel with "Pat Berning medical mission" in the memo. Fore more information, please contact Pat at patberning@fuse.net. RANDOM QUOTE April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks Go. ~Christopher Morley |
